Locality Guide - Whakatane

Location Description

Whakatane has undergone something of a renaissance in recent years as more people become aware of the real beauty of the area.

The tourism and accommodation industry, has really taken off and new motels have increased visitors' options. In and around the district, you'll also find lodges, home and farmstays. With a population of around 15,000, Whakatane is small enough enough to be personal and situated conveniently close to Tauranga, the Rotorua thermal area and the East Coast. It's also on the doorstep to White Island and some adventure sport.

Whakatane's township was given a major tidy up a few years ago and new restaurants, cafes, brasserie and bars have added to its holiday appeal.

Home to the Ngati Awa tribe, Whakatane is the landing place of the migration canoe Mataatua. Historic evidence of Whakatane's cultural growth - both Maori and European is everywhere and much attention has been focused on retaining those links with the past. Whakatane's museum is particularly fascinating and houses some excellent records of the district's early history. Just out of town is the Water Wheel, which gives another fascinating glimpse into a bygone era.

Because this district is so compact, exploring it is easy. Awakeri's Hot Springs are only a few kilometres out of town. The forestry townships of Kawerau and Edgecumbe are less than half an hour away.

White Island, New Zealands only marine volcano, also demands attention. Art, culture, natural history, recreation, adventure sports - there's a lot to see and do in and around Whakatane.

Attractions

  • Ohope Beach is over the bluff behind Whakatane. It is 11 kilometres long and is an excellent venue for all seaside activities.

  • The bronze Wairaka Statue of the Maori teenager who rescued her tribe's drifting waka is situated on the top of a large rock at Whakatane's harbour entrance. As she paddled the waka to shore, she shouted: 'Ka Whakatane au i ahau' - Whakatane means 'to act as a man'.

  • There were originally 22 pa sites in and around Ohiwa Harbour and Ohope Beach, behind Whakatane. Many of these sites can still be visited. It is thought that this relatively dense population lead Captain Cook to call the region the Bay of Plenty. Whakatane is accepted as the first area in which arable farming, in this case kumera planting, was used.

  • White Island is an active volcano off shore from Whakatane. It can be visited by helicopter, fixed-wing aircraft and charter vessels.

  • Schools of up to 2,000 dolphins visit the coast. People have the option of observing them from a boat or joining them in the water. This is a very popular attraction.

  • The magnificent Tarawera Falls are 50 minutes' drive from Whakatane./p>
